Statement by CTBTO Executive Secretary
Tibor Toth on the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
to US President Barack Obama

“The road towards achieving nuclear disarmament that President Barack Obama has chosen to travel can be an arduous path. This recognition by the Nobel Committee of the President’s efforts can only strengthen his resolve.

President Obama has declared his commitment to move forward with ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, ‘and work with others to bring the Treaty into force so that nuclear testing is permanently prohibited’.

I wish to congratulate the President on his award and the Nobel Committee’s support for his quest for peace”.

------------------------------------------------------------------- 182 States, the vast majority of the international community, have signed the CTBT, underscoring their support for a definitive ban on nuclear testing. 150 of these have also ratified the Treaty.
