Advances in Near-Surface Geophysics
ALEXANDER PETER ANNAN
Peter Annan is the CEO of Sensors & Software Inc., based in Canada, which is the leading innovator in ground penetrating radar and delivers subsurface imaging solutions worldwide. Annan’s primary research interest is in applied electromagnetics (EM) and geophysics. His research is recognized world-wide for pioneering advancement in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Airborne Electromagnetics (AEM).
Following completion of his PhD, he worked with the Geological Survey of Canada, Barringer research, and Golder Associates prior to establishing his own technology development companies. Annan continues to author scientific publications, patents and technical reports, and has served on Canadian and international government, academic, and professional committees. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

Since July 2010, Andreas Becker has been the Head of the Precipitation Monitoring Unit and the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre, located within the Department for Hydrometeorology at the Deutscher Wetterdienst (German Meteorological Service), Germany.
Before that he served for nine years as Atmospheric Sciences Officer at the CTBTO where he was in charge of in-house capacity building in atmospheric transport modelling (ATM). As a specialist in the fields of hydro-climatology, ATM and science management, he voluntarily provides technical advice to the CTBTO and the NDC of Germany upon request.
Satellite Image Use in On-Site Inspection: From Site Selection Through Field Efforts
Ward Hawkins joined the US Department of Energy National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1979 as a Containment Scientist for US nuclear tests. Since then he has been involved in many projects related to underground testing including: the Joint Verification Experiment for the Threshold Test-Ban Treaty; the Underground Test Areas Environmental Restoration Project; and Ground-based Nuclear Explosion Monitoring Research and Development. Ward currently leads the LANL Nuclear Testing Limitations Program which develops and evaluates On-Site Inspection (OSI) technologies for CTBT verification. He also Chairs the Provisional Technical Secretariat’s Scenario Task Force for the OSI Integrated Field Exercise planned for 2014.
ICT Advances and Expectations
Simon Jones has a degree in mathematics from Cambridge University and started his career as a mathematical modeller using large computers, later moving into public and private sector information technology (IT) management. As Chief Information Officer in the UK Department for International Development (DFID) from 2004 to 2011, he was a founding member of the UK Government Chief Information Officer (CIO) Council.
In November 2011, Jones was appointed as Director of the United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC). In this chief executive role, he is responsible for the strategy and operations of the UN’s IT shared service organization, providing services to around 35 members of the UN family.
Ocean Observing of Earthquakes and Tsunamis for Advanced Early Warning System and Prediction Researches
Yoshiyuki Kaneda received an MSc degree in geophysics in 1979 and a PhD in 1995 from Tokyo University, Japan. As a researcher in physics: geophysical exploration, he worked at the Institute of Japan National Oil Corporation (JNOC, now JOGMEC). In 1997, he moved to the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). At present, he is the leader of the Earthquake and Tsunami Research Project for Disaster Prevention at JAMSTEC.
Uncommon Events and Confidence in an International Monitoring Regime
Terry Wallace is the Principal Associate Director for Global Security at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), USA, and leads the LANL programmes related to global threats. These programmes apply the laboratory’s technical capabilities to an array of problems with a focus on nuclear proliferation, nuclear terrorism and cooperative initiatives to track nuclear materials.
Wallace’s expertise is in forensic seismology. Wallace holds PhD and MS degrees in geophysics from the California Institute of Technology and BS degrees in geophysics and mathematics from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Wallace is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and has received the AGU’s Macelwane Medal.
The Response of CTBT Radionuclide Monitoring System to the Fukushima Accident
Wolfgang Weiss has been instrumental in the field of radiological detection, and served as an advisor to the German Government during CTBT negotiations. His professional activities have included: Director of the Institute for Atmospheric Radioactivity in Freiburg, Germany; Head of the Department of Radiation Protection and Health of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) in Munich; and Chair of UNSCEAR.
Weiss holds a doctoral degree (PhD) from the Department of Physics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He is a member of the OECD/NEA Committee on Radiation Protection and Public Health (CRPPH) and Vice-Chair of Committee 4 of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).
