Federico Guendel served as Director of the International Monitoring System (IMS) Division at the CTBTO from 2006 to 2012. Dr Guendel is a national of Costa Rica who first joined the CTBTO in 2004 when he was appointed to work in the Equipment Section of the On-Site Inspection Division.
Prior to this, he was the station manager of IMS auxiliary seismic station AS025 in Las Juntas de Abangares, Costa Rica, in cooperation with the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology/International Deployment of Accelerometers (IDA/IRIS) project in the USA.
Between 1989 and 1992 he served as Vice-Chancellor for Research at the National University of Costa Rica. From 1978 to 1982 he was a professor at the School of Physics at the University of Costa Rica and a researcher at the National University where he served as Director of the Research Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (OVSICORI).
Dr Guendel also served as chief seismologist for the Costa Rican Electricity and Communications Institute from 1978 to 1982, monitoring reservoir induced seismicity at the Arenal Hydroelectric Project.
Since leaving the CTBTO in 2012, Dr Guendel has continued to play an important role in CTBTO activities and projects
