Ward Hawkins is Project Manager, Nuclear Testing Limitations at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, National Nuclear Security Administration, USA. His work includes developing and evaluating On-Site Inspection (OSI) technologies for verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). He performs OSI Inspector training and has participated in many OSI workshops, table top and field exercises, and equipment tests. He has provided U.S. technical support for many CTBTO meetings charged with resolving technical issues related to the CTBT (Working Group B). He is the Exercise Scenario and Control Team Leader for the CTBTO’s OSI Integrated Field Exercise 2014 in Jordan.
Dr Hawkins joined Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1979 as a Containment Scientist for U.S. underground nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). He has been involved in many projects related to nuclear testing including: the Joint Verification Experiment which led to the ratification of the Threshold Test-Ban Treaty and monitoring site selection for the Remote Seismic Test Network. He was Chairman of the Technical Working Group for the Underground Test Areas Environmental Restoration Project at the NTS. He managed the Ground-based Nuclear Explosion Monitoring Research and Development program at LANL. He was also a Drilling Manager for the Hot Dry Rock Program.
