John Walker is the Head of the Arms Control and Disarmament Research Unit (ACDRU) at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK, where he has worked since March 1985. He currently focuses on the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC), the Comprehensive Nuclear- Test- Ban Treaty (CTBT), and arms control verification generally.
Walker has been a member of the UK delegation to the BTWC, the CWC Review Conferences and the CTBTO Working Group B meetings. He was also head of the external evaluation team for the three CTBTO on-site inspection build-up exercises leading to the Integrated Field Exercise in 2014 (IFE14) and for IFE14 itself, which was held in Jordan. He has participated in various roles in over sixty CBW, nuclear weapons and anti-personnel landmines on-site inspection related exercises in the UK and elsewhere since 1989, including the CTBTO’s Integrated Field Exercise at Semipalatinsk in 2008. Dr. Walker has published widely on aspects of CBW history in the Harvard-Sussex Program’s CBW Conventions Bulletin. He has also published books on British nuclear weapons and disarmament.
