BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The The international scientific community has contributed to the development of the CTBT’s global verification system since the Treaty’s inception. The verification regime uses four different technologies to monitor compliance with the Treaty in all environments: seismology, hydroacoustics, infrasound monitoring and radionuclide monitoring.
Today, the 337 International Monitoring System (IMS) facilities envisaged in the Treaty are moving toward a stage of completion. The CTBT’s unique on-site inspection (OSI) regime has also been developed and was recently tested successfully during the Integrated On-site Inspection Field Exercise (IFE08) in Kazakhstan.
CONFERENCE PROGRAM
Day 1: Roundtable discussions on the CTBT’s verification provisions. Thematic panel discussions focusing on the detection, location and characterization capabilities across the four verification technologies of the CTBT, panel discussion on system performance and panel discussion on methodologies and techniques for the OSI.
Day 2: In-depth discussions of contributed scientific studies.
Day 3: Looking ahead in connecting the CTBTO with Science in the areas of: global capacity building, scientific and civil applications of CTBT-related data and knowledge, science and technology foresight, and the way forward using science for security.
Note: The Final Program will be available not later than 15 May 2009.
