When was the CTBTO Preparatory Commission established and what is its main aim?

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) is an international organization in its own right. It was established on 19 November 1996. Its main purpose is to make the necessary preparations so that the CTBT can be effectively implemented once the Treaty enters into force, and to prepare for the first session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Treaty. Its main activity is to build-up the global Verification Regime, which monitors compliance with the Treaty once it enters into force, and to promote the provisions of the Treaty.
