CTBTO Executive Secretary briefs UN Security Council
CTBTO Executive Secretary Robert Floyd has addressed the United Nations Security Council in a briefing to mark the 25th anniversary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and its significance within the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation architecture.
The briefing, organized by Ireland as current President of the Security Council, focused on the achievements of the Treaty since it opened for signature in September 1996, and the importance of its entry into force.
Let us join together in this 25th anniversary year to turn the promise of the CTBT into a reality.
“Our ultimate objective is clear – the total elimination of nuclear weapons,” Floyd said. “But we cannot hope to achieve a nuclear-weapons-free world without a universally applied, non-discriminatory, and verifiable prohibition on nuclear testing. And what better way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the CTBT than by moving the world closer to this noble goal?”
Other speakers at the briefing, held on 27 September at UN Headquarters in New York, included the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Izumi Nakamitsu, and Magdalene Wanyaga, a Kenyan member of the CTBTO Youth Group.
