2018 CTBTO GEM – Youth International Conference


On 28 August 2018, members of the Group of Eminent Persons (GEM) and the CTBTO Youth Group (CYG) will gather in Astana for a five-day conference aimed at reflecting on the role of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation in building global peace and finding ways to strengthen it in the future, namely through raising the profile of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

The CTBTO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan are hosting the event, which is held under the theme “Remembering the Past, Looking to the Future.” The conference will convene around the International Day against Nuclear Tests on 29 August, which was proposed by Kazakhstan and designated by the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 64/35 (2009).

The Astana Conference offers an engaging platform for interaction between members of the GEM and CYG. Comprised of discussion panels involving GEM and CYG members, as well as government representatives and students from Kazakhstani universities. The conference will be opened by CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo, Kairat Abdrakhmanov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, and Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Chairman of the Senate. Conceived as an “intergenerational dialogue”, the conference will aim to investigate potential spaces for cooperation between all participating groups to sustain momentum for the universalization and entry into force of the CTBT.


Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the Semipalatinsk former nuclear test site, as well as to meet the experts of the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan and visit the laboratories of the Institute of Radiation Security and Ecology.
