Alik Ismail-Zadeh is Senior Scientist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institute of Applied Geosciences, Karlsruhe, Germany. He is also Chief Scientist, Research Professor and Head of Research Group of the Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics, Moscow, Russia. He has been a visiting scholar or professor at several academic institutions, including the University of Cambridge, UK.
Ismail-Zadeh is Secretary-General of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), Founding President of the Natural Hazards Focus Group of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and Founding Vice-Chair of the IUGG Commission on Geophysical Risk and Sustainability. He has also been chair or member of a number of committees and commissions of international and intergovernmental organizations, including the European Geosciences Union (EGU), Euroscience, the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and the UNESCO International Geoscience Programme.
Dr. Ismail-Zadeh is the recipient of several awards, including those from the Humboldt Foundation, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Royal Astronomical Society, and the Royal Society of London. His scientific interests cover the dynamics of the lithosphere and the upper mantle and its surface manifestations including seismicity, seismic and volcanic lava hazard, and disaster risk. He is a principal author and co-author of over 120 peer-reviewed papers and seven books.
