Principal Deputy, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, California, USA

John “Jay” Zucca is a physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, where he is currently the Principal Deputy for the Global Security Directorate. The Global Security Directorate executes programmes in counter-terrorism, global threat reduction, nuclear non-proliferation, and energy technology.

From December 2008 to December 2012, Dr. Zucca served as the Programme Director for Non-proliferation in the Office of Strategic Outcomes, where he was responsible for the external interfaces and strategic direction of the Livermore programme which supports the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Defense Nuclear Non-proliferation. His technical work was primarily on nuclear test monitoring and he was a member of the U.S. delegations to the Nuclear Testing Talks (Threshold Test-Ban Treaty), the Conference on Disarmament for the CTBT, and to the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO.

Dr. Zucca also holds key leadership positions at Working Group B.  He is a Task Leader for Technology Refreshment and the Assistant Task Leader for on-site inspection issues. He has also served as Task Leader for the International Monitoring System.
