OBJECTIVES
The PTS is exploring ways to improve the performance of the IDC’s automatic processing pipeline, an important aspect of which is the timely and high-quality automatic processing of aftershock sequences and other recurring events. For this reason the PTS launched a project with the objective to evaluate three algorithms that will help address this issue, namely the Empirical Matched Field algorithm by NORSAR, the SeisCorr algorithm by Sandia National Labs and the XSEL algorithm by the IDC.

The objective of this technical expert meeting is threefold:

  • For the developers of these algorithms to present their tools and methods and how they addressed specific aftershock sequences and recurrent events;
  • For the IDC to present the experimental pipeline it developed in order to integrate these algorithms and generate automatic seismic event lists;
  • For all participants to discuss the performance of the methods, compare them with one another, note each of the pros and cons of the method and compile a common summary agreed upon by the three stakeholders.

Meeting participants are welcome to contribute to the technical meeting by giving a 15 minute presentation(s) related to the topics above.

AGENDA

  • Introduction to the comparison and evaluation criteria;
  • Presentation of aftershock sequence processing using the three algorithms (two cross-correlation and the empirical matched field techniques);
  • Presentation of other recurrent events processing using the three algorithms;
  • Presentation of aftershock processing and/or recurrent events using other methods by the NDC experts, if any;
  • Presentation of the IDC experimental pipeline; and
  • Presentation of the results of evaluating the three algorithms.
    Discussion and outcome.

PARTICIPANT PROFILE

Members from the three algorithm inventors (NORSAR, Sandia National Labs, IDC) as well as representatives from NDCs and research establishments who have relevant expertise in applying or developing methods that address aftershock or recurring event processing.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Applicants are requested to visit our website Opens external link in new windowhttps://ctnw.ctbto.org/ and apply online latest by 24 December 2019 (registration is free of charge).

Financial support may be available to a limited number of participants. Such assistance must be requested at the time of registration (by selecting the relevant box during online registration). Financial support will be considered only for those whose submitted abstract has been accepted.

Participants are strongly encouraged to first seek travel and participation funds from non-CTBTO sources.

States Signatories wishing to nominate experts are requested to inform the Provisional Technical Secretariat (see Administrative Point of Contact) through their respective Permanent Mission.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION
Applicable to PTS-funded participants only

In accordance with the Staff regulations and rules and Administrative Directives, the PTS will provide the following:

  • A Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) to cover related expenses during the training programme will be provided to the training participants on the first day of the training;
  • The PTS travel agent will reserve, issue and send the flight tickets to the participants for the most direct and economic route;
  • Funded participants are not allowed to purchase their own tickets unless, under exceptional circumstances, they are authorized to do so and only if this proves to be most cost efficient for the PTS;
  • The PTS will book a hotel and cover the costs for accommodation; and
  • Health insurance will be provided that covers the duration of the training.

Requirement: Scanned passport copies.
