CONFERENCE TO PROMOTE ENTRY INTO FORCE OF COMPREHENSIVE NUCLEAR-TEST-BAN TREATY
24 and 25 September 2009, Conference Room III
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will open the meeting on 24 September 2009 at 8 am. The meeting will be chaired jointly by the Foreign Minister of France and Morocco, Bernard Kouchner and Taib Fassi Fihri. Foreign Ministers from among over 100 countries will speak, including Hillary Clinton of the United States, Stephen Smith of Australia, Celso Amorim of Brazil, Lawrence Cannon of Canada, Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, Alberto Romulo of the Philippines and Carl Bildt of Sweden, as well as UN Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas. The conference will call on all States that have not yet done so to sign and ratify the CTBT so that the Treaty can enter into force. The United States participates for the first time since 1999. The conference is open to the media.
UN SECURITY COUNCIL MEETING ON NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION AND DISARMAMENT
24 September 2009, 9-11 am

U.S. President Barack Obama will chair the meeting. This will be the first UN Security Council meeting at Heads of State level on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, including the CTBT, since 1992. The Security Council is expected to issue a resolution with strong language on the CTBT. Proceedings can be followed in Conference Room III while the CTBT conference is adjourned.
