Senior Experts' Discussion on Civil and Scientific Applications of CTBT Verification Technologies

A Senior Experts' Discussion on Civil and Scientific Applications of CTBT Verification Technologies, organized by the CTBTO Preparatory Commission and the Government of the United Kingdom, took place in London from 9 to 10 May 2002. All six geographical regions of the Treaty were represented, with fifteen senior experts from thirteen States participating (Australia, China, Ecuador, Egypt, Finland, France, Iran, Israel, the Netherlands, Russian Federation, South Africa, UK and USA). Five staff members of the Provisional Technical Secretariat (PTS) also participated in and supported the event. In addition, four observers from the United States, VERTIC (Verification Research, Training & Information Centre) and the International Seismological Centre (ISC) attended the discussion.

The discussion aimed to review and further explore civil and scientific applications of Treaty verification technologies and assets, in order to enhance support to the Treaty and the timely establishment of the verification system. It is hoped that this valuable and productive exercise may lead to further regular exchanges on developments relating to civil and scientific applications of verification technologies.
