CTBTO Preparatory Commission holds a seminar on the CTBT in Tlatelolco, Mexico

A seminar on the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) took place on 28 April 2005 in Tlatelolco, Mexico. The seminar was organized by the Preparatory Commission of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) as a side event during the "Conference of States Parties and Signatories of Treaties that establish Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones" which was held in Tlatelolco, Mexico. Participants of the seminar included representatives of States and non-governmental organizations who attended the conference in Tlatelolco. They were briefed on the ongoing work of the Preparatory Commission of the CTBTO, political aspects of the CTBT and benefits arising from the membership in the CTBTO Preparatory Commission. The Chairperson of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO, H.E. Ms Taous Feroukhi, Ambassador of Algeria, opened the seminar and stressed the symbolic value of the seminar taking place in Mexico during the "Conference of States Parties and Signatories of Treaties that establish Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones". In her opening statement Ms Feroukhi recalled that Mexico first launched the initiative for the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Latin America. Today, the Tlatelolco Treaty has 33 members throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The Chairperson of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO also addressed the "Conference of States Parties and Signatories of Treaties that establish Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones" on 26 April 2005. In her statement, Ms Feroukhi stressed the complementary objectives of the CTBT and the Treaties establishing Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones. She made particular reference to the relationship agreement of the Preparatory Commission for the CTBTO with the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL) that was concluded on 18 September 2002.
