United Nations General Assembly President meets with Executive Secretary

HE Mr. Jan Eliasson (Sweden), President of the sixtieth session of the United Nations General Assembly, paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary, Mr. Tibor Tóth, on 24 January 2006. The Executive Secretary provided an overview of the status of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), including prospects for the Treaty's entry into force. He also gave a brief overview of the International Monitoring System and the distribution of data and products of the International Data Centre to Member States. Mr. Eliasson showed particular interest in the possible civil and scientific application of CTBT verification technologies, including the contribution to tsunami early warning, earthquake mapping and detecting ash-producing volcanic eruptions. The discussion also touched on issues related to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
