CTBTO head meets former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and technology leaders in Silicon Valley
The Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Lassina Zerbo, met with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution in California, USA.
Zerbo, together with his Special Assistant for verification-related issues and the head of External Relations, briefed Rice on recent developments related to the verification regime of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), including the successful detection of the announced nuclear test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in February 2013.
The Executive Secretary underlined the unique detection capability of the CTBTO’s International Monitoring System (IMS), stressing that this was the only system worldwide to have detected airborne radioactivity 55 days after the event, which could be attributed to the announced nuclear test. Zerbo described his exchange of views with Rice, which included the CTBT’s role in serving U.S. security aims and the prospects for the Treaty’s entry into force as “open and constructive”.

Zerbo was in the United States to attend the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) as an invited speaker. Scientific issues related to CTBT verification were the subject of a number of talks and sessions at the meeting.
The delegation also met with technology leaders in Silicon Valley to brief them on the future of the Treaty and its verification system and to discuss opportunities for future collaboration.
