CTBTO head meets Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister

The Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), Lassina Zerbo, met Kazakhstan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Erzhan Ashikbayev today in Vienna. They discussed nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation issues, including prospects for entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the build-up of the Treaty’s verification regime.
As his country hosted the CTBTO's first full-scale on-site inspection exercise, the Integrated Field Exercise at the former nuclear test site at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan in 2008, Ashikbayev congratulated Zerbo on the successful conclusion of the second Integrated Field Exercise 2014 in Jordan.
Zerbo thanked Ashikbayev for his country’s strong support for the organization. At a meeting yesterday, CTBTO Member States designated Kazakhstan together with Japan to coordinate international efforts towards the CTBT’s entry into force in the two-year period following the upcoming Article XIV conference in New York in September.
