Training Course on NDC Capacity Building: Scenario-Based Advanced Training Course on Radionuclide Particulates Data Analysis
LOCATION
Vienna International Centret
Vienna, Austria
DATES
8-12 December 2025
LANGUAGE
The working language will be English.
OBJECTIVES
The primary objectives for the workshop are to:
- To enhance understanding of the role and responsibilities of National Data Centres (NDCs) within the verification regime.
- To strengthen practical analytical skills for radionuclide particulate spectra, including automated processing, background correction, and interpretation of complex samples.
- To reinforce consistency between NDC analytical practices and those of the PTS through scenario-based exercises simulating operational situations
AGENDA
A detailed final agenda will be distributed in due course.
This one-week course will be a scenario-based format. Each day focuses on a specific operational scenario, combining refresher lectures, guided analysis, and hands-on exercises.
Core topics (refresher and tools)
- Review of particulate spectra analysis algorithms.
- Data download and automated processing pipelines.
- Use of supporting spectral data and automatic background subtraction.
- Handling of peak interferences and overlapping spectra.
- Introduction to Monte Carlo–based simulations (GRANDSim)
- External IDC database access and cross-checking practices.
Software tools used in training
- iNSPIRE (Integrated Software Platform for Interactive Radionuclide Review)
- GRANDSim (Geant4-based Radionuclide Detector Simulation)
- SQL Developer (for external database access)
- RNToolkit
- SWP
PARTICIPANTS PROFILE
This training is intended for NDC technical staff already engaged in particulate spectra analysis to advance their skills through scenario driven workflows (reprocessing, validation, and reporting).
Eligibility and prerequisites
- Applicants should be designated NDC technical staff, preferably with Principal or Regular user status.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have successfully completed the Introductory Training Course on Radionuclide IMS Data and IDC Products (particulates and noble gas).
- Participants are expected to have hands-on experience with RN data analysis or equivalent CTBT verification-related work.
- A working knowledge of spectrum interpretation, quality control, and uncertainty concepts is assumed.
Model Participant Profile (examples)
Mid-level NDC Analyst
- 2–4 years of experience in reviewing gamma particulate spectra.
- Holds a degree in physics or a related field and is familiar with nuclear physics concepts such as alpha/beta/gamma decay and Compton scattering
- Training goals: refine workflows for reprocessing, peak interference resolution, and validation of reported values.
Senior/Lead NDC Analyst
- 5+ years of experience working in an NDC, including responsibilities for responding to elevated radionuclide events and preparing national reports.
- Already proficient with IMS RN data and IDC products, but needs to enhance decision-making in complex or low-level signal cases
- Training goals: enhance decision-making in complex or low-level signal cases, and consolidate operational conventions within the team.
Junior Analyst (Introductory course completed)
- Completed the Introductory Training Course on Radionuclide IMS Data and IDC Products (particulates and noble gas) and gained several months of spectrum review experience.
- Background in physics, geophysics, or a related discipline, with e-learning on CTBT and basic nuclear physics concepts completed.
- Training goals: strengthen interpretation of automated results, identify quality issues, and ensure consistency i reporting practices.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
The deadline for application is 22 September 2025
NDC technical staff are invited to submit their applications for this training through established official channels (their Permanent Missions to the CTBTO or Ministries of Foreign Affairs).
Applicants are requested to use the registration form to apply:
Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified subsequently.
However, pending an official nomination, participants may email the registration (see Point of Contact information), upon its approval by the Director/Head of the institution,to allow timely travel and accommodation arrangements by the Provisional Technical Secretariat (PTS).
FINANCIAL INFORMATION
In accordance with the Staff regulations and rules and Administrative Directives, the PTS will provide the following:
- A round-trip ticket to Vienna on the most direct and economic route;
- Funded participants are not allowed to purchase their own tickets unless, under exceptional circumstances, when authorized to do so and only if this proves to be the most cost efficient for the PTS;
- The PTS will book a hotel and cover the costs of accommodation;
- Training participants will receive relevant portion of the Daily Subsistence Allowance (per-diem) via bank transfer upon arrival to the first day of training;
- Health insurance for the duration of the training, including travel days.
